Formally we are talking about the 'Peoples Republic of China' here but this is commonly referred to as China and China's history is maybe the longest of any nation in the world and it is sometimes phrased the 'Last Empire' yet it is difficult to talk about China as one country. The area is vast and the population is dominated by the Han-Chinese but the differences in the country, by any way you want to measure it, are huge and there is very little that the bustling coastal provinces have in common with the arid Northern desert. Even throwing the 'coastal' provinces on 1 heap can be considered to go too far.
As a site for expatriates we will therefore try and outline what is common in the country and be more specific concerning certain cities such as Shanghai.
At the risk of being political here we will also exclude Taiwan and Hong-Kong from China.
The land-area is more than 9.3 million square kilometers and there are about 1.3 billion Chinese citizens. As can be expected from a country this size the climate varies hugely from tropical to sub-arctic and from '4-seasons' to 1.
