Visas

Most people enter China on a single-entry tourist visa that is later converted to a multi-entry work visa after obtaining their Work Permit. You are not required to leave the country for conversion. Foreigners who come to China for residence of one year and upwards (in applying for a visa) are required to submit examination health certificates*, original passport, a complete visa application from and one recent passport-size (2x2) photo (in addition - the resume of the visa applicant may be required if your company is registered in Pudong)

If the examination is performed in your home country, the certification must be presented to Shanghai Health examination Centre (1701 Hami Lu). The Chinese government may not accept your overseas examination. The local examination includes a blood test, but you can be assured that the needles are sterile and unused (If you want to be extra careful it is advised that u bring your own needles). You will need to bring the following items to the health centre:

G (transit): issued to individuals in transit to other countries within overnight layovers in China.

Z (work): issued to foreigners working for foreign-owned or joint venture corporations.
L (tourist) issued to tourist sight seeing in China.

Suggested time to apply for visa is one month before your departure (to avoid expiration of the visa).

It is best to discuss your own personal circumstances with the Division of Aliens & Exit-Entry Administration Shanghai Public Security Bureau. Rules may differ depending on Country of Origin. 333 WuSong Rd (Tel: +86-21-6357-7925)

Resident Registration (Yellow Paper)

You are allowed to live anywhere if you move to Shanghai with the intentions to stay (work visa); but the local government requires all foreign individuals to register with the local Public Security Bureau (Police station) closest to your home within 24 hours of moving to your permanent residence. You will need to bring along your passport and resident permit/temp resident certificate. If you are staying at a temporary residence the management staff/hotel staff will be able to assist you. This involves getting a 'yellow paper/yellow receipt' issued as proof of registration.

Note: Various sources repeatedly Quote:- "If you do not do that, you can be fined 500 RMB per day. It is not written anywhere in Shanghai, neither in the airport nor in the official offices. Our purpose is to warn you."

Should you move house during your stay, you are then required to reregister with a police station closest to your home. In most circumstances this can be organized through a 3rd party without you personally having to be there.

**Note: Some foreigners opt for a Visa F when they don't yet have a job that will give them a work visa and a residence permit. As this visa can be issued with validity of 30, 90 or 180 days and can allow multiple entries and are easy to extend for up to 1 year with just a simple letter from 'a' local company. Normally organized by visa agencies

***Note: This information was valid in March 2005, we will try and keep it up-to-date but please check careful yourself.
