When we speak about public transport in Shanghai we mainly refer to the metro, or subway system. You will see a large number of busses plying the streets, there are two main type of buses: city buses and overland buses, both are very cheap. Since these buses are extremely crowded, you have to be very careful of pickpockets. The bus net is very extensive and the fares are quite low. Yopu won't find the busses to be commonly used by foreigners (and it is not recommended by us).
The subway is another matter. The network is not incredibly extensive yet with 3 lines but being expanded. Stations are numbered and with a map and some counting you will get a long way. Tickets are bought at counters and a single trip will cost you between 1 and 4 RMB, free transfer between Line 1 and Line 2 at Renmin People's Square. No free transfer between metro lines 1 and 2 and the Pearl Line, cheap for you foreigner. Look at the sign to determine how much you need to pay and 'spit' Yi, Liang or San Kwai and you are ready to go (phonetically written down here and speaking as if angry seems to help the pronunciation, no joke). Moving between Shanghai proper and Pudong is generally even faster by metro then car, simply take a taxi on either end.
