If you need to travel between cities in China you can choose your mode of transport depending on the distance, your wallet, speed and desired comfort level. Which means choosing between bus, train or plane.
The railway system in China is not the best in the world but is being upgraded. On the longer distances between cities it is however the only real alternative for the plane. Long distance bus services can be very decent but should not be considered for trips over a couple of hours, so say 500 km, unless you want to be adventurous. The buses thusfar were reasonably confortable and made some reststops along the way. The plane of course is the 'easiest' and fastest option though, due to the lack of serious competion, not particularly cheap. As an expat though we expect you'll find yourself on a plane most of the time.
